Whether you are mechanically-inclined or mechanically-challenged, it is always a good idea to learn to detect common vehicle problems on your own. Tech geniuses as well as us common folk can do this. It just requires some spotting tricks and use of the senses. Better safe than sorry, we say.

  1. Check for fluid under your car – do you see anything? If you do, what color is the fluid?
    • Yellow-green, blue, or bright orange – your engine is overheating or you have an antifreeze leak. If you see yellow-green, blue, or bright orange, come see us immediately!
    • Dark-brown or black – your engine might be leaking oil due to a bad seal or gasket.
    • Red/oily texture – your transmission or power-steering is probably leaking fluid. This is cause for concern.
    • Clear water – your air conditioner is probably just dripping some water as a bi-product of its cooling reactions, which is not anything to be worried about.
  2. Check for odd smells coming from your vehicle – what do you smell?
    • Burnt toast – an electrical short or burning insulation is probably present. Do not continue to drive your car if this scent is present, but take it in to see us right away.
    • Rotten eggs – there is a probably a problem with your catalytic converter, which means you should take it in right away.
    • Thick, sharp odor – Is there also any smoke coming from your vehicle? Oil may be burning or leaking. Get it checked out ASAP.
    • Smell of gas, after starting engine – you engine may be flooded due to a leak in the fuel system, which can be dangerous, so take it in.
    • Sweet odor - your coolant may be leaking, which can also be indicated by a change in engine temperature.
  3. Is there steam coming up from your hood? Your vehicle is probably over-heating. Get it towed into the shop.
